What is Mental Health First Aid? Why is it important?
Mental Health First Aid Training is training that firstly enables you to take care of your own mental health and wellbeing. It gives you an insight into the signs and causes of mental health issues. It also helps you to be aware of these in others, whether friends, family or colleagues.
MHFA is a course designed to provide attendees with the skills needed to support themselves and those around them. It is NOT designed to train anyone on counselling; rather it helps you to deal with a situation where an individual needs help to seek out the correct support. These aims are achieved through recognition, acknowledgement, understanding and guidance.
Mental Health awareness is now a major tool in combatting this difficult and sensitive issue. Key to dealing with Mental Health issues are:
- Recognition – knowing the signs
- Approach – how to deal with a sufferer
- Removing the stigma – too many people feel ashamed of acknowledging difficulties
- Support – helping sufferers come to terms with the issue
- Guidance – assisting sufferers in finding help and support
What does the course offer?
Our courses last two days delivered in a workshop format. This will include group discussion, individual reflection, presentations and group discussion. Delegates will also receive course materials in the form of a Mental Health First Aid Manual, and upon successful completion they will receive a certificate confirming that they have achieved the standard required to be a Mental Health First Aider.
Who is the course aimed at?
The common misconception is that company managers should be attending this course. In fact, it is aimed at, and designed for, people of all levels in corporate and everyday life. People may not wish to open up to their managers if they are struggling; they may feel more comfortable discussing issues with a colleague on the same level. At the same time, those with responsibility for individuals and teams will benefit greatly from knowing the signs that a person may be struggling.
